Unsightly foam and froth present on the surface of ponds is due to an excess of protein in the water. The more protein present the larger the amount of foam.

The actions of NT Labs Antifoam will break down the froth, but it will not get rid of the protein in the water. Antifoam is non toxic and can be used daily if necessary.

If there is a lot of foam constantly present, the efficiency of the biological filtration system should be checked by using Ammonia and Nitrite test kits and the amount of food fed should be reduced.

Freshly drawn tap water contains chlorine and chloramines, which is added to the water by the water authorities to disinfect and prevent contamination by bacteria and other pathogenic agents. Unfortunately both these compounds are extremely toxic to our koi, causing panic and intense gill irritation amongst other symptoms.

Thus when ever tap water is added to the pond, i.e during a water change the chlorine and chloramines must be removed. NT Labs Chlor Go contains compounds that not only remove the chlorine and chloramines, but also remove any heavy metals that are frequently present at low levels in tap water.

Maintaining a general hardness of water of at least 8 degrees of hardness helps to keep the biological processes working properly thus avoiding stagnation and acidification.

The calcium and magnesium forming the general hardness of water are essential for the proper growth of plants and aquatic micro-organisms which consume unicellular algae and help to keep the water clear.
